Tying philanthropy to the bottom line

Reflecting on recent readings, I found the article “Philanthropy, Inc.” to be very interesting and pertinent to the research that I have been doing on CSR.  It really highlights the difference between random giving and strategic social responsibility.  Make community gifts that give back to the company as well.  I particularly like the quote from Diane Bissell of Raytheon: “We have engineers and scientists, and we need engineers and scientists. Why would we fund a program for nurses aides?”

This win-win philosophy is what CSR needs to gain wider acceptance.  It’s not just about giving to charity - it’s about making stategic contributions that help the company, as well as the community, flourish.
