Striking a Balance
Something a little serious and a little silly for your Friday. Anyone considering marketing green products should consider these two sources.
I posted earlier that 98% of “green” claims were found to be greenwashing. This report from TerraChoice is the source for that statistic. If you look at their “seven sins”, you’ll see that you have to be pretty careful to keep off their list. According to their report, one of the greatest offending industries is cosmetics.
Tip for staying off the greenwashing list: Avoid use of “All Natural” on your label (Sin of Vagueness). As they point out in the report, formaldehyde and arsenic are all natural.
So don’t claim to be green and not be green enough. You also don’t want to be too green or you will risk winding up on Time’s Top 10 Eco-crazy list. Some of these seem a little crazy, but others I thought, “Hey, what’s wrong with that?” I won’t get into specifics about which those were.
Tip for staying off the Eco-crazy list: Stay away from anything having to do with human or animal excrement. Or breast power.
